The mathematical basis of the GLS superimposition shows that all figures must be scaled before superimposition.
This scaling - that ignores size differences between figures - makes it sometimes difficult for inexperienced Procuste users to interpret variation between different profiles. Once scaling is achieved, the only differences that persist are differences in proportion.
Although this approach is new in orthodontics, we must note that proportions are fundamental for artists who believe that beauty is essentially a question of harmony in proportions. Orthodontists point of view is the same and treatments aim at restoring or preserving the harmony of (facial) proportions.
To illustrate this, please note that differences between the three profiles below
are independent of the size of your screen.
Interpretation of malocclusions or facial deformities in terms of disproportions becomes quickly natural and intuitive for orthodontists using the Procuste cephalometry method.
